Barrett Financial, Anacortes School District Launch Second Annual Champions in Education Awards

ANACORTES, Wash.Barrett Financial is once again partnering with the Anacortes School District to recognize the people who make a lasting difference in local classrooms.

Nominations are open for the second annual Champions in Education Award, a program that honors staff members who go above and beyond to support students and strengthen the community.

Barrett Financial is thrilled to fund two $5,000 grants — one awarded to a certificated staff member and one to a classified or non-represented staff member.

“Teachers and school staff play an extraordinary role in shaping our community’s future,” said Amy Hong, owner of Barrett Financial. “These awards are one way for us to thank our educators and celebrate the dedication we see every day in Anacortes schools.”

The award reflects Barrett Financial’s ongoing commitment to investing in the communities it serves — not just through financial guidance, but by supporting the people and institutions that help those communities thrive.

Last year’s inaugural recipients were Julie Van Quickenborne, a special education paraeducator, and Amy Kammenga, a special education teacher at Island View Elementary. Both were recognized for their commitment to equity, inclusion, and helping students succeed in and out of the classroom.

Nominations are open to students, families, staff, and community members. Eligible candidates include teachers, specialists, paraeducators, office staff, custodial teams, coaches, and many others who contribute to the daily success of Anacortes schools.

The nomination deadline is 5 p.m. April 24. Recipients will be recognized at a School Board meeting on May 21.
